A Good Look at the HGBF GM/GM

The RGMGM-79 GM/GM is a Gunpla that appears in Gundam Build Fighters: GM's Counterattack. It is piloted by Gunpla Mafia member E

Backstory:

Uniquely customised by the Gunpla Mafia, the GM/GM served as the organisation's chief Gunpla. "GM" at the front of the name is the abbreviation for Gunpla Mafia, who has started renewed activities at the same time as Yajima Trading has revived the Gunpla Battles. Based on the mass-produced GM from Mobile Suit Gundam, it features maximised movability and improved mobility, yet maintains the high applicability to mass production. Characterized by no particular features, the Builders belonging to the Gunpla Mafia customised it as they liked for their use.

Review:

Pros:

  • An awesome redesign of the iconic GM, the proportions are sleeker and sharper than just about any previous reiteration and variant of the model. Although I am not a fan of the series, I just had to get this model if only for its' aesthetics alone.
  • Excellent articulation -- better than most other HG models I have seen. The chest section even separates as seen in one of the pictures that give it better reach and pull off poses that are just not possible with most other HG models.
  • Minimal stickers and excellent colour separation. There are only four stickers on this kit and limited only to the lenses on the head. The rest of the colour separation are actual parts.
  • The model has potential as an excellent base kit for any custom project. There are connection points on the legs and on the arms to attach additional weapons or armour.

Cons:

  • Limited weapons and accessories - you only get the pitiful looking spray gun, shield and two beam sabres. If you want the full loadout, you will have to purchase the GM weapon options which I currently do not have yet.
  • You have to purchase two more of this model kit to get other variants of this model. They do include the heads of the other options which seems to be Bandai's way of enticing people to buy more of the kit
  • Seam lines on the arm -- despite the redesign and new engineering on this kit, Bandai seems to have cut corners on the arms. Similar to older releases, the seam lines in the arms are very much apparent. Of course, you can always seal the seam lines with plastic cement if it bothers you that much (I  intend to).
  • Waist area looks sparse with gaps (to where the legs attach). Fortunately, this is not obvious unless you are looking at a specific angle like you will find in one of the pictures (kicking pose).

Conclusion

Overall, the HGBF GM/GM is an excellent model kit and dare I say one of the best HG models I have seen so far. In my opinion, this level of engineering should be the new standard in High Grades. If you are a fan of UC Federation grunt suits, then this guy is a must-have.
